Samsung confirms Galaxy A8 (2018) and A8+ (2018) release date

Image
Samsung has confirmed the release date for the newly-unveiled Galaxy A8 (2018) and A8+ (2018) smartphones. During a recent event in Vietnam, the South Korean company confirmed the devices will go on sale there January 6 onwards. This is inline with the 'early January' release time frame we have been hearing so far. Of course, release date will likely vary from region to region, so there's still no information on when other key markets will get these phones.

We might see the Snapdragon 845 in Chromebooks

Image
Just like the Snapdragon 835 in 2017, we can expect to see the Snapdragon 845 in many high-end smartphones during 2018. Qualcomm recently announced its Snapdragon 845 CPU at a launch event in Hawaii. At the event, Qualcomm had a lot to say about the “Always Connected PCs” running Windows 10 on the ARM architecture. Chromebooks may also be able to take advantage of Qualcomm’s Always Connected PC ideology, according to a couple of Chromium commits found by XDA Developers. The first of these commits references a new board called “chezea” while a later commit defines ‘chezea’ as a new board overlay for a reference device that runs the Snapdragon 845.

Huawei agrees to pay Nokia for patents in multi-year license deal

Image
One of the biggest patent holders in the mobile space is still Nokia, and this was confirmed once more today. Following similar deals it made in the past with the likes of Apple, Samsung, LG, and Xiaomi, the Finnish company has announced that it has agreed to license its patents to Huawei. It's a multi-year deal with the Chinese smartphone maker, but no financial details have been provided yet. Nokia did tell its investors that it expects to start booking revenue off of this agreement, including a one-off catch-up payment, by the end of this year. An analyst speculates that Huawei's payments may be around €100 million per year. Interestingly, Huawei is one of Nokia's biggest competitors in the telecom network equipment business - which is where more than 90% of Nokia's revenue comes from.

Samsung Galaxy S8+ discounted to €636 on Amazon Germany

Image
Great deals on smartphones in the EU seem to be a lot rarer than in the US, but from time to time we do find a gem for you. Case in point: right now, Amazon Germany is selling the Samsung Galaxy S8+ for just €636. That's €263 less than its usual price, so it's clearly a bargain. As usual, there are some caveats to note. First off, only the Midnight Black color version is this cheap. For the Orchid Grey version you'll have to pay €649, while the Arctic Silver hue commands a premium even over that, going for €699. That's still €200 of than the introductory price, though.

EU court declares Uber a transport company not a digital service

Image
European Union’s top court ruled today that the ride-sharing platform Uber is a transport service and should be regulated similar to taxi operators. The company claimed it is a digital service and should pay lighter taxes as other e-commerce businesses. Uber launched in 2011 and currently operates in about 600 cities and regions in the world, with more than 60 of them being in the EU. The European Court of Justice says the service provided by Uber “is covered by services in the field of transport” and should be treated by member states as such.

New Facebook feature issues alert if you're spotted in someone else's photo

Image
Facebook has introduced a couple of new features that the company says will help people better manage their identity on the social network. First up is the ability to issue notifications whenever you show up in someone else's photo. So if you have the feature enabled, and Facebook spots you in a photo, and you're also part of the audience of that image, then you'll be notified about this, even if you've not been tagged in the photo. "You’re in control of your image on Facebook and can make choices such as whether to tag yourself, leave yourself untagged, or reach out to the person who posted the photo if you have concerns about it," Facebook says.

Chrome Browser will start blocking ads on February 15

Image
Google announced an initiative to begin blocking ads with its Chrome browser back in June. This announcement entailed that the usage of ad blocker extensions on Chrome has been on the rise and continues to do so. Since Google is a company that makes the majority of its money on advertising, it wants to make sure that web surfers can have a pleasant, unobtrusive experience without overly annoying ads. Google will begin to block all ads from websites seen with the Chrome browser (including its own ads) starting on February 15, but only on one condition: the website doesn’t pass Google’s “Better Ads Standards”. This means that any website that displays ads that might be overly annoying won’t show any ads when the viewer uses Chrome.

Samsung Galaxy A8 (2018) and A8+ (2018) go official with dual selfie cams, Infinity Display

Image
Meet the Galaxy A8 (2018) and Galaxy A8+ (2018) – Samsung’s new naming scheme hides it, but these are the successors to the Galaxy A5 (2017) and A7 (2017). These two sit closer to the S-series than any of their predecessors and even bring something unique. On the front is Samsung’s first dual selfie camera – a 16MP + 8MP combo. The Live Focus feature lets you chose whether the background is in focus or blurred to a soft bokeh. The phone will seamlessly switch between the two front cameras to get the effect you need.

Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ front panels leak alongside rumored battery capacity

Image
Last week we showed you CAD-based renders of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+, which have showed the devices from all angles (there are even render videos). Today coming to further confirm the minimal design changes for the S9 duo from their predecessors is a shot of their front panels. The image clearly shows a very similar design to the S8 and S8+, but with ever so slightly smaller screen bezels. The trimming is especially noticeable when you glance at the bottom bezel, but it's definitely still a bezel - the once-rumored complete cutting of that hasn't panned out, it seems.

Nokia 5 survives scratch, burn, and bend test

Image
The latest phone to go through the standardized scratch, burn, and bend testing performed by Zack from YouTube channel JerryRigEverything is the Nokia 5. This is definitely set towards the lower-end of the mid-range in the brand's Android smartphone portfolio, but it still comes with a full metal body and a solid-looking build. It can also be had in the intriguing Copper color version, which is the one that stars in the video embedded below. The Nokia 5 manages to pass the test with flying colors, which means Nokia's well known propensity for creating solid devices has been left intact even after HMD Global started to develop phones bearing the brand.

Facebook to start demoting posts with engagement bait titles

Image
Facebook has announced a new policy that should cut down on a lot of spammy garbage from your timeline. Going forward, all posts that ask users to engage with them in any way will be demoted and buried out of view. Engagement baiting is a tactic that has become popular on the internet recently where the headline goads the reader into interacting it in some way or the other. On Facebook, these usually manifest themselves as posts that begin with "Like this if…" or "Tag someone who…" or "Comment if you…", etc. These get people to interact with them, which in turn increases their engagement quotient and makes them rank higher.

Nokia 2 in for review

Image
The Nokia 2 is here and enters the line for review. It packs modest specs in a modest package - 5-inch LCD, 1GB of RAM, a Snapdragon 212 chipset - but comes at an attractive price €99/$99. So who is it for? And what does it offer in exchange for that attractive price? The Nokia 2 is for the buyer that needs the cheapest smartphone, but also wants good battery life. Traditionally, low-end phones had pretty poor endurance, but HMD aims to change that.

Apple iPhone Xc concept emerges; calls for cheaper colorful iPhone X for India and China

Image
It’s a known fact that Apple is a premium brand. And considering price and positioning, the iPhone is definitely at the premium end of smartphones currently available in the market. This year as the Apple iPhone completed 10 years, the company announced a new flagship device that widened the gap in terms of price. The Apple iPhone X starts at close to a lakh. That’s at a retail US price of $999.

Nvidia announces Titan V, a $3000 graphics card based on Volta

Image
NVIDIA has announced the Titan V, a prosumer graphics card based on the company's brand new Volta architecture using 12nm process that supersedes the previous Pascal architecture found on the Titan Xp. It's a $3000 graphics card that is designed entirely with compute performance in mind for people working on AI, deep learning, 3D rendering, and other computationally intensive applications. At the heart of the Titan V is the GV100 GPU that was first seen on the $10000 (yes, that's one with five zeroes) Tesla V100 back in May. For the most parts, the GPU is identical, with 21.1B transistors, 5120 CUDA cores and 640 Tensor Cores. The Tensor Cores enable certain specific compute operations and is able to handle them much quickly and efficiently than the standard CUDA cores. This, coupled with the 1200MHz core clock and 1455MHz boost clock, results in single precision of 13.8 TFLOPS and double precision performance of 6.9 TFLOPS, both just a shade under what the V100 can

Upcoming full-screen Xperia smartphones leak in images

Image
Two new Xperia smartphones have leaked, sporting the in vogue fullscreen bezel-less designs. The images come courtesy GizChina.com, who are confident these are indeed images and not renders. The two devices not just look different from current Xperia devices but also between each other. One device has the current squarish Xperia design with what look like speaker grilles at the top and bottom on the front. On the back is a very unique looking curved matte and glossy surface, with the matte regions forming semicircles at the top and bottom. The glossy area in the center is supposed to be glass with a fingerprint sensor underneath. The two camera modules are oddly spread apart, which probably means one is just a depth sensor as this much spacing would result in much larger parallax for any other arrangement.

Image

Google Files Go app now available publicly on the Play Store

Image
The Google Files Go app is now out of beta and available to everyone on the Play Store. Files Go is primarily a file manager app designed with Go Edition devices in mind. Instead of showing your file directory it instead has categories like images, videos, audio, documents, apps, etc. The app also lets you send files to another Files Go user. It creates a local hotspot, which it then uses to send the file over on Wi-Fi. Depending upon your device, you can get some pretty fast transfer speeds without ever using any data.

There will be another round of sales next Tuesday on December 12, but according to the numbers, units might go out as fast as the first time. They will be available again in seven days, but this time the company is adding an incentive - five lucky owners of the V10 will also get a smart band Huawei Honor Band A2.

Samsung now mass producing 512GB storage for phones

Image
In this week’s poll we asked you how much storage is enough. Currently, most popular phones come with 32GB-64GB and the most you can get is 256GB. Samsung intends to change that as it started mass production of 512GB eUFS storage. The new storage has the same physical dimensions as the current 256GB storage, good news since internal space in phones is at a premium. Samsung built it out of 64-layer 512 gigabit chips, eight of them, while the older eUFS storage used 48-layer chips.

Android Go renamed to Android Oreo (Go Edition), is finally ready to roll out

Image
For the second time, Google has officially announced Android Oreo (Go Edition). Previously known as Android Go, this new variant of Android is designed specifically for low-end Android devices with low memory and data usage in mind. Android Oreo (Go Edition) (horribly clunky name, I know) has three main differences from the standard edition of Android Oreo, streamlined operating system, optimized default apps and an optimized version of Play Store that highlights lightweight apps. The Go Edition has improved speed and reliability on low-end hardware, with 15% faster app performance. You also get 2x more free storage as the OS and built-in apps take 50% less space. There is also a data saver feature built-into apps and you can also control your background data consumption.

This 650-horsepower Lambo claims 190 mph, but also Level 2 self-driving assists and a back seat In the auto industry’s ever-present move toward SUVs and trucks, every company has to jump on board. Even though Lamborghini once made a Hummer-esque SUV (and tractors), the 2019 Urus is its attempt to cash in on a lucrative market for high-performance (and high-priced) SUVs.

Nokia 9 arriving next month along with Nokia 8 (2018)

Image
There have already been a handful of rumors and leaks related to the Nokia 9, so it was about time we got filled in on the unveiling date. A new report from China says the device will be made official next month. HMD is holding a product launch event in China on January 19, and the Nokia 9 will likely be the star of the show. In addition, the next-gen Nokia 8 will also be made official during the same event. Both will be customized for China market, which likely entails special ROMs where Google services have been replaced by local alternatives.
