Xiaomi showcases its first ever in-house chipset - Surge S1

Image
Just as teased and teased, right on the date, Xiaomi unveiled the Surge S1 - its first in-house chipset. This is the lower-tier of the two Pinecone CPUs Xiaomi has planned and is built on a 28nm process. In comparison, the higher-end Pinecone V970 we're waiting on will be built around the efficient 10nm process.

Image

It had two major announcement - its first in-house chipset named Surge S1 and a Xiaomi Mi 5C smartphone, powered by the new processor. Xiaomi Mi 5C has 5.15” display, a 12 MP main camera and a 8 MP snapper on the front for all the selfies on Weibo. This whole setup is powered by octa-core Surge S1.

A whopping billion hours of YouTube content is being consumed each day

Image
YouTube is undoubtedly one of the most popular online video services available today. But just how popular is it? Well, here's a number that should give you an idea: we are consuming a whopping billion hours of YouTube content each day. To put that figure into perspective, "If you were to sit and watch a billion hours of YouTube, it would take you over 100,000 years," the company said in a blog post. "If you spent 100,000 years traveling at the speed of light, you could travel from one end of the Milky Way to the other." YouTube was recently in the headlines after Google announced that it's planning to do away with the 30-second mandatory ad format. Perhaps, the company should also disclose how much of those 'one billion' hours are advertisements (:p). Source: gsmarena Source Follow us on Twitter Like our page on Facebook

Samsung Galaxy S7 edge named the best smartphone at MWC 2017

Image
GSMA has recognized the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge as the “Best Smartphone of 2016” in the “Best Mobile Handsets and Devices” category at MWC’s yearly “Global Mobile Awards”. The Samsung Galaxy S7 edge was (and still is) a wonderful device, and it got even better after the company updated the handset to Android Nougat. In fact, it really held its own, thanks in part to the Galaxy Note7 fiasco. When Note7 users needed to turn their defective devices back in, many opted to swap it out for the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge. After all, it had a large-enough screen, dual edge display, and the same CPU+RAM combination. The only things it was missing were an S-Pen, larger screen, and the Iris scanner.

Nokia 6, 5, and 3 to be made in India, market launch in June

Image
HMD announced three Nokia Android smartphones yesterday (plus the 3310 (2017) homage of a feature phone), and we got to spend a few minutes of hands-on time with them. The folks over at fonearena have spoken with Ajey Mehta, India VP at HMD Global, revealing some details on the manufacturing and logistics. The Nokia 6, 5, and 3 will be manufactured in Foxconn's Indian facilities from the very beginning.

Moto G5 Plus to be available in India on March 15

Image
Two Motorola Moto devices were launched yesterday at MWC in Barcelona, and they sure look promising. The Moto G5 has a pretty decent 13 MP f/2.0 primary camera and is powered by Snapdragon 430. It also has a bigger sibling named Moto G5 Plus which is a 5.2” screen device with the power-efficient Snapdragon 625 and a 12 MP dual-pixel camera that records 4K video. India is one of the first countries to feel the Moto experience with a launch date for the Moto G5 Plus on March 15.

Oppo announces the world's first dual camera with 5x zoom, periscope style

Image
Oppo is attending the MWC 2017 as well but they are not announcing any new phones here. Instead, much like last year, it have come to showcase a camera technology that the company have developed for mobile use. The technology in question is a 5x Dual Camera Zoom system, which utilizes a unique periscope-style setup.

Lenovo introduces four more laptops at MWC

Image
The Mobile World Congress is for all kinds of mobile devices. Some of the most exciting unveilings were the LG G6 and the Huawei P10, but there are also laptops that were launched in Barcelona and deserved our attention. Lenovo, for example, launched a new notebook - a 15” Yoga 720, 14” Flex 5, 13” Yoga 520 and 2-in-1 inexpensive device Miix 320. The most powerful laptop of all four is clearly the Yoga 720. It comes with 4K 15” display and has Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 GPU and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity. The device is 14.3 mm thick and weighs about 1.3 kg. The 4K version offers 8 hours of battery life, but there’s also a cheaper, more durable version with FullHD screen which will last longer on a single charge.

LG G6 will launch at close to $800 in S. Korea, so much for 'value proposition'

Image
LG sugarcoated a few controversial choices about the G6 (most notable being the Snapdragon 821 chipset) in a 'value proposition' concept that emphasizes user experience over raw specs. Well, that value proposition is set to launch at a price of KRW 899,800 in its home Korean market - a few dollars short of $800. The G6 will hit the stores on March 10. The info comes from an interview with LG Electronics mobile chief Cho Juno taken at the G6 announcement press conference and published today in Korean media.

Gionee just unveiled the A1 and A1 Plus handsets

Image
Gionee just unveiled the first two offers in its brand new "A" line of devices. The Gionee A1 and A1 Plus both come with big batteries and a focus of selfies and audio quality. These seem to be the pillars of what Gionee believes will be a winning market combination for 2017. Starting with the smaller A1, it measures 154.5 x 76.5 x 8.5 mm and weighs in at 182 grams. This is a bit on the chunky side, but a fairly large 4,010 mAh does probably account for a lot of that. It is powering a 5.5-inch, FullHD AMOLED panel, a MediaTek Helio P10 chipset, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. At least on paper, this does spell out impressive battery endurance. To top things off, the Gionee A1 also has Dual-SIM sipport, a 13MP, f/2.0 main shooter and a 16MP, f/2.0 one on the front, complete with a selfie flash. It is offered in Gray, Black or Gold and boots Android 7.0 Nougat.

Image
At the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC), Lenovo has announced a new 'Tab 4' tablet series, consisting of Lenovo Tab 4 8, Lenovo Tab 4 8 Plus, Lenovo Tab 4 10 and Lenovo Tab 4 10 Plus. The 8-inch/10-inch standard Tab 4 tablets are powered by Qualcomm MSM8917 (Snapdragon 425) chipset and sport a 1,200x800-pixel resolution display. RAM is 2GB, while storage options include 16 or 32GB. The camera department is handled by a 2MP front unit and a 5MP rear unit.

ZTE announces the Blade V8 Mini and Blade V8 Lite

Image
ZTE just announced a couple of midrange smartphones at MWC - the Blade V8 Mini and the Blade V8 Lite. The Blade V8 Mini is hailed as the 'perfect smartphone for photography lovers', thanks to its dual camera on the back. The setup consists of a 13MP primary sensor and a 2MP secondary one for depth sensing. You get bokeh effects with simulated apertures in the f/1.0-f/8.0 range and post-capture refocusing. The selfie camera is a no-nonsense 5MP fixed-focus unit. The phone sports a 5-inch 720p display and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 (28nm, 8x1.4GHz Cortex-A53 CPU, Adreno 505GPU). You get 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage, which you can expand via microSD.

Sony Xperia XA1 and XA1 Ultra go official with thin bezels, great cameras

Image
Before the XZ came about, our favorite letters of the Xperia alphabet were "XA". Sony revamped both the bezel-light 5” mid-ranger and the selfie-holic 6” Ultra model under the new XA1 heading. Seriously, though, the cameras on these two phones punch well above their weight category.

Huawei Honor 6X now available on open sale in India

Image
The Huawei Honor 6X - which was announced for India last month, and went on sale in the country earlier this month through flash sale model - is now available for purchase sans registration. The device was first announced back in October last year, and it landed in the US last month. Source: gsmarena Source | Via Follow us on Twitter Like our page on Facebook

LG G6 disassembly reveals an advanced heat pipe, sealed-in Li-Po battery

Image
Dedicated teardown and disassembly outlets like iFixit won't have much work to do on the G6, other than the odd repair guide - LG took its latest smartphone apart right in front of us. Hint: it's good to start by removing the SIM card tray. Popping off the Gorilla Glass 5 back panel reveals a rather massive fingerprint reader assembly complete with controller, all mounted to the cover. On the phone we see the wireless charging coil, but as you've probably already found out, that's only going to be present on the US versions of the G6. Sad.

HP Pro x2 is a rugged convertible tablet with Windows 10

Image
HP is also at the Mobile World Congress and it has its own understanding of what mobile stands for. The company has launched a Windows 10 device named HP Pro X2 with a detachable keyboard and a stylus. HP Pro x2 was launched today at MWC in Barcelona. The device is a convertible laptop/tablet that has a 12” display with FullHD resolution. It is developed to work with a detachable keyboard and a stylus, much like a Surface device or the Android-powered Galaxy Tab S3. It is also extremely tough - the Pro x2 is designed to withstand MIL-STD-810G tests. And if this isn’t enough, you can buy an extra case for further protection because why not.

Samsung Galaxy Book 10.6 and Galaxy Book 12 hands-on

Image
Samsung might have skipped on smartphone announcements at this year's MWC, but that doesn't mean the Korean giant didn't take the event seriously. On the contrary, the Barcelona venue saw a total of three tablet announcements, all clearly geared towards a more serious, productivity-oriented crowd. Sure, you could argue that the 10-bit HDR panel and 4-speaker AKG setup on the Tab S3 shout multimedia loud and clear. However, beyond that, Samsung's new lineup is all business, especially its two new Windows-based 2-in-1 offers. The Galaxy Book 10.6 and Galaxy Book 12 both run Windows 10 on standard PC X86 hardware and employ a 2-in-1 factor. This, as well as the general design, Super AMOLED panels and a few other specs and accessories, make the pair quite similar to the Galaxy Tab S3. However, unlike their Android sibling, these come with both an S Pen and a slightly different keyboard accessory out-of-the-box. Combined with the Windows environment, this

Moto G5 and G5 Plus get a metal build, Snapdragons 430&625 inside

Image
Lenovo/Motorola has announced yet another generation of the hugely successful Moto G - we are now at 5 - and that means the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus are official. Sharing an overall similar design and metal build, the two smartphones are meant to bring a touch of premium to a model range governed by budget considerations. Motorola Moto G5 The plain Moto G5 is built around a 5-inch FullHD IPS display, covered with Gorilla Glass 3. At the helm is the Snapdragon 430 chipset with a 1.4GHz octa-core processor doing the number crunching. There are 2GB of RAM on board and storage is either 16GB or 32GB, expandable in both cases. A 13MP f/2.0 primary camera with phase-detect autofocus sits on the back of the G5, and there's a 5MP f/2.2 wide-angle front-facing cam as well. The Moto G5 gets a fingerprint sensor below the display too - of the previous generation only the Plus had the feature.

The Nokia 3310 is back, but it's not exactly a pretty sight

Image
Just like the rumor-vine predicted, HMD didn't skip on the opportunity to ride the nostalgia wave and reincarnate the legendary Nokia 3310 for a second go on the 2017 mobile scene. We are sure opinions will be polarized on the EUR 49 feature-phone, but that definitely fits into the whole idea. Whether you find it unsightly, or enjoy its colorful and playful looks, the new 3310 will definitely get fans talking, even if not necessarily buying. Again, as far as design goes, you will just have to judge for yourself. The new 3310 measure only 115.6 x 51 x 12.8 mm and is plastic all around. HMD claims it did the best it can to recreate the original 3310 rounded shape and silhouette. The rounded buttons on the retro keypad definitely hit home. However, the 2.4-inch QVGA display and the curved and polarized layer on top, do look a bit off. So do the buttons on the front.

Nokia 5 and 3 go official, special edition Nokia 6 Arte Black joins them

Image
And they’re back! Nokia phones are going global after the initial trial run of the Nokia 6 in China. Also announced today are the Nokia 5 and Nokia 3, both finely-crafted phones running pure Android. All three will come out in Q2 in single and dual-SIM forms. Nokia 6 There’s almost nothing new here other than the price - the Nokia 6 will cost €230 and will launch in Q2 this year. In fact, all three phones will come out in Q2. But there was a surprise - the special edition Nokia 6 Arte Black. It’s distinguished by a piano black finish and extra memory.

Google Assistant is coming to a droid near you

Image
Google Assistant is finally making its way to all Android smartphones running OS version 6.0 and 7.0. The personal assistant will become available to English users in the US this week , followed by English users in Australia, Canada and the UK. German-speaking users in Germany can expect it around the same time too. Google says it will continue adding more languages this year. Users will begin seeing Google Assistant as it's gradually being rolled out through a Google Play Services update.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 pricing and launch date revealed

Image
Yesterday, we shared the leaked specs sheet of Samsung’s upcoming tablet. The Galaxy Tab S3 is an Android Nougat tablet with an S Pen and pogo pins for a hardware connection to a keyboard. Today, an early listing on the website of UK retailer John Lewis reveals the expected price for the device, which is the hefty £600. Ouch! The tablet is expected to be officially unveiled by Samsung later today, but since John Lewis is one of the biggest department store chains in the UK, we’d say the listing is credible. The price in British pounds translates to $750 or €700 – and that’s for the Wi-Fi only model.

LG G6 is official with FullVision 18:9 display, Snapdragon 821 chipset

Image
The smartphone star of MWC 2017 has been announced - this is the LG G6. A 'Full-vision' display, water and dust protection plus some careful impact resistant design, cameras aplenty, tried and tested internals - the G6 may no longer be the flagship (the V-series will fly that banner from now on), but it sure sounds like flagships should be wary. A lot of the G6's novelty stems from its display - a 5.7-inch IPS LCD panel that takes up most of the phone's front - it's why LG calls it FullVision. The screen has an odd 18:9 aspect ratio (or, as math would have it - 2:1) and a resolution of 2,880x1,440px for a pixel density of 565ppi. Consumers want a larger display, yet aren't willing to give up single-hand use - the 2:1 ratio gives the best of both worlds.

LG G6 launch is live-streamed, here’s how to watch it

Image
We’ve seen numerous leaks and heard even more rumors about LG’s new flagship G6. The LG G6 Day is finally here and we’ll see who was right and who was wrong. The event will be streamed live on LG Mobile’s Facebook page and YouTube channel and starts at 12:00 CET (GMT+1). The device we’ll see at the event is trying to get LG’s Mobile division back on its feet after the financial fiasco that was LG G5. And since the main competitor Samsung is withholding the next Galaxy device, LG went all in and teased some of the features little by little. So far we know the device will be water- and dustproof. It will have a massive display with 18:9 ratio, named “Full Vision.” Industry insiders also reported the device would hit the shelves on March 10, right in time for the start of the new school semester in South Korea.
