Galaxy S9 and S9+ press images leak, look largely familiar

Image
The Galaxy S9 duo have leaked again, this time in a press image, courtesy Evan Blass aka evleaks writing for  VentureBeat . From the image, you wouldn't really be able to tell these are new devices at first glance until someone told you otherwise. The phones feature largely the same design as last year's S8 and S8+ but have slightly thinner bezels, especially at the bottom. Although the back of the phones aren't visible in this image, Blass confirmed that it will be different from the current S8, wherein the cameras will be mounted vertically and the fingerprint sensor placed below them, making it easier to reach.

Integral unveils 512GB microSD card, coming this February

Image
A 512GB microSD card was unveiled as far back as mid-2015, but that never came to market. Maybe this new one will work out better - Integral Memory promises it will arrive in Febuary (but there’s no price yet). The new 512GB card is rated class 10, UHS-I U1 meaning it guarantees a minimum of 10MB/s sequential writes. That should be enough for 4K shooting and plenty of it – it half a terabyte of memory! That’s sustained sequential speed, the card tops out at 80MB/s.

Android 8.1 now shows you how fast public Wi-Fi networks are

Image
Although Android 8.1 has been out for a few weeks now, Google interestingly hasn't stopped adding new features to its latest software release. Case in point: speed labels for public (open) Wi-Fi networks. This functionality has started rolling out today. Once you get it, you will see an estimation of how fast each nearby public Wi-Fi network is, as portrayed in the screenshot to the left. The levels are Very Fast (20+ Mbps), Fast (5-20Mbps), OK (1-5Mbps), and Slow (0-1Mbps). These labels should help you quickly decide whether it's worth connecting to such a network, hopefully saving you some time when you encounter a slow one - time otherwise spent waiting and waiting for things to load.

Image
The vivo X20 Plus UD with a fingerprint scanner under the display will be officially announced on January 24. The date was confirmed by the company that sent out invites for the launch in Beijing. According to TENAA, the phone is expected to have the same basic specs as the vivo X20 Plus - 6.43” AMOLED with 18:9 ratio and Snapdragon 660 chipset. There is a dual camera on the back with the primary one having a 12 MP sensor and a f/1.8 lens, while the secondary is 5 MP and is used mainly for background blur. We already had a hands-on with a demo unit of the phone where we tested the under-screen fingerprint scanner. It works as accurate as a standard sensor, although a bit slower. If previous rumors are true, the vivo X20 Plus UD will cost CNY3,998 or around ($625/€510). This is CNY500 ($78/€63) more expensive than the regular X20 Plus that has been on sale since October. Late last year a purported list of smartphones arriving in 2018 with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 chipset on board got leaked, and it mentioned the OnePlus 6 would be launching in June. Now in an interview with CNET, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau has confirmed both of those details. "There's no other choice" for his company than the Snapdragon 845, Lau said. The handset is scheduled to launch late in the second quarter, which ends on June 30. The CEO hasn't actually confirmed the OnePlus 6's name, but logic dictates that's what it will end up being called.

Leaked Samsung Galaxy S9 retail box unveils specs

The Samsung Galaxy S9 is coming next month at MWC 2018, but some specs might have been outed by an alleged retail box that got pictured. Although most of the specs look similar to the current Galaxy S8, there a couple of interesting additions - stereo speakers and variable aperture for the Dual Pixel 12 MP camera. LG showcases new rollable 65” OLED display

Image
LG Display used CES 2018 in Las Vegas to officially unveil its new OLED displays - one of them being a 65-inch 4K flexible screen that can be rolled like a newspaper. The other is an 88” 8K OLED panel that we told you about last week. The flexibility of the 65” OLED display makes it easier to transport or store in the corner. Its small size allows for better space utilization, meaning you can take the TV anytime, anywhere and “enjoy bright, high-resolution content”. LG Display will also showcase its latest upgrades of the IPS technology. The panels now have IPS nano-color, “which expresses rich colors using nanoscale high-color reproduction particles, and IPS technology, which increases the transmittance and reduces the intensity of light reflected on the panel.”, said the company in a press release. LG unveils world's first 88-inch 8K OLED display

Image
LG has announced the world's first 88-inch 8K OLED display. The display is all set to be gawked at CES 2018 later this month. Since this is an OLED panel, LG was able to make it as big as it is and with 8K resolution without compromising on brightness, which LG is quick to point out is an issue for LCD panels of similar size and resolution. To combat that, LCD panels have to bump up their brightness, which increases power consumption, which is not an issue with the LG OLED panel.
