LG X screen & LG X cam hands-on: flagship features go mid-range (Video)

Image
LG has made its presence felt at Mobile World Congress 2016 with the announcement of its G5: a flagship that threatens to give even the Galaxy S7 a run for its money with some compelling, one-of-a-kind modular hardware. And while we’re very excited to spend more time with the G5, it’s not the only new smartphone LG’s brought to Barcelona, and we also spotted a couple of those new X-series models hanging by in the wings, just waiting for a little hands-on action.

LG obviously thinks the G5 is better than the Galaxy S7, but we’d rather wait and see

Image
And so it begins. To be honest, we’re surprised it took so long for LG and Samsung to start the teasing games, but perhaps the Galaxy S7 makers were caught off guard by the G5’s modular design, while LG ran out of mocking ideas when noticing the microSD’s return. Bottom line, this may just be the most evenly matched flagship contest in recent memory, yet that didn’t ultimately stop the perennial underdog from coming up with a dubious comparison infographic.

Samsung Galaxy S7 boasts the best smartphone display, says DisplayMate

Image
Samsung has a reputation for being at the forefront of smartphone display technology, with both last year’s Galaxy S6 and Note 5 boasting the best displays in the business for their time. Samsung appears to have struck gold once again with its Galaxy S7, as testing from DisplayMate reveals that the new handset has the best display around. DisplayMate w as granted access to an early production unit to put through its usual selection of display tests. Impressively, Samsung has managed to significantly improve the S7’s display when compared with the Galaxy S6. The overall display contrast and Contrast Rating for High Ambient Light results have shown notable improvements, and the maximum brightness is up a whopping 24 percent on the previous gen model, reaching 855 cd/m2.

Cubot and Cheetah Mobile unveil the CheetahPhone, headed to Europe for €199

Image
It's not every day that a phone maker partners with a company known for creating mobile apps in order to design a new handset, but that's exactly what's going on with Cubot and Cheetah Mobile. They're both Chinese companies, but that hasn't stopped them from jointly unveiling the CheetahPhone at MWC in Barcelona today. Unlike many other Chinese devices, this one is officially on its way to Europe, where you'll be able to pre-order it from Amazon for €199 sans contract. Pre-orders will start on March 20, and the phone will start shipping at some point in April. After that, it will also be launched in Africa.

No Xperia Z6, X series to replace Z series, Sony confirms

Image
While we were expecting to see as many as five of them, Sony has confirmed that there won't be any Xperia Z6 at all. The confirmation came in the form of a Facebook comment by the German arm of the Japanese company. In addition, the company also revealed that the new Xperia X series of smartphones - which was announced at the ongoing MWC in Barcelona - will replace the Z series. "A Z6 will not exist. The new X series is under a modified concept that meets the needs of our users even more accessible," the Google translated version of the comment read. So, what does this mean. Well, going by what all Sony has confirmed, it'd be safe to assume that the the new SD820-powered Xperia X Performance is Sony's flagship for the year. The other two phones that the company unveiled at MWC are the Xperia X and XA. For MWC 2016, click HERE Source: gsmarena Source 1 2 | Via Follow us on Twitter Like our page on Facebook

Meizu Pro 5 mini won't see the light of day

Image
For those who were looking forward to the mini variant of the Meizu Pro 5 smartphone, there is some bad news: the 4.7-inch device won't see the light of day. This was confirmed by the Chinese company's founder and CEO Huang Zhang on Weibo. The reason cited was that the recent earthquake in Taiwan has adversely affected their supply, and most of their inventory has been damaged. Hanging on to the Pro 5 mini would have delayed the device beyond acceptable limits so they decided to ditch the project altogether. Zhang said the company will now focus on the Pro 6 flagship instead. So we now know that a Pro 5 successor is in the works. ARM announces 32-bit Cortex-A32 for wearables and IoT

Image
Today, ARM has announced its latest Cortex processor, the Cortex-A32, offering wearable and rich embedded processor manufacturers a new upgrade path over the older Cortex-A5 and A7 CPU cores. The Cortex-A32 is ARM’s smallest and lowest power ARMv8-A processor. You would normally associate ARMv8 with 64-bit computing, but unlike the company’s other ARMv8-A designs the A32 is 32-bit only. That is why ARM prefers to talk about AArch32 and AArch64, but more about that in a moment. Unlike ARM’s Cortex-R8 announcement last week, the Cortex-A32 is designed for Rich OS and high performance situations, where ultra-high energy efficiency is a requirement. This is unlikely to power your next smartphone, but it has been specifically designed with wearable and internet-of-things (IoT) devices in mind. Looking a little closer at the chip, it is based on a very similar design to the Cortex-A35, but it isn’t just a cut down version. The Cortex-A32 can be scaled up to quad-core impl...
