Razer's new prototypes stolen from CES booth: "It is cheating, and cheating doesn't sit well with us."

Image
While CES 2017 has drawn to a close, news surrounding the products unveiled at the world's biggest consumer tech event continue to make the headlines. Take Razer, which had a very encouraging week after unveiling two new gaming prototypes (one of which won two Best of CES 2017 awards). However, things ended on a sour note after company CEO Min-Liang Tan confirmed that two of its concept products were stolen from its booth on the last day of the show.

Nokia 6 hands-on shows that sweet metal body in full glory

Image
Nokia is back in the smartphone game and even if the mid-range China-exclusive 6 isn’t exactly what we all wanted at least it will give us some valuable insights for the future of the HMD-owned brand. You see while the Nokia 6 will retail for under $250 its aluminum body is more fitting of a flagship or at least an upper midrange device, so maybe it’s a good indication on what’s to come at MWC.

Android-powered Nokia 6 marks the brand’s return to smartphones

Image
The Nokia brand is finally back in the smartphone game as today HMD Global, which holds the rights to the name, announced the Android 7.0 Nougat-powered Nokia 6. The bad news is that it’s a mid-range device for the Chinese market, so we’ll have to wait a little longer to get a premium global device. Atypically for a mid-range device, the Nokia 6 comes with an aluminium unibody carved from a single solid block of 6000 series aluminium. It then undergoes two separate anodizing procedures to acquire a look far above what its price tag suggests.

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 is shown in more colors: green, purple, and pink

Image
There's a game Samsung usually likes to play, and it's called 'launch more color versions for a device once it's been out for a few months'. Now it looks like Xiaomi felt inspired by this strategy and decided it was time to apply it too. First we saw the white Mi Mix yesterday, and now the Chinese company is showing three new colors for its Mi Note 2 flagship phablet at CES, ones never before seen for the handset that launched in black, gold, and silver.

The Blade V8 is another new dual-camera smartphone, courtesy of ZTE

Image
The ZTE Blade V8 Pro definitely turned some heads at its CES 2017 announcement. We already managed to secure some hands-on time with the phone and frankly, kind of liked it. The "Pro" moniker already suggested there's another model coming, but now it is official - ZTE unveiled the basic Blade V8. Now, you would be forgiven for thinking the pair isn't related in any way. The ZTE Blade V8 has a radically different exterior. It is still just as elegant, perhaps even more so, thanks to the diamond-cut metal body and 2.5D front glass. The clean front side does offer some similarity, but the back features completely different, horizontal arrangement for the dual-camera setup. That is one of the devices signature features and the main fuel for ZTE's ad campaign targeted squarely at the younger crowd. The setup consists of a 13MP full-featured camera with autofocus and an additional 2MP fixed-focus one. The latter is clearly designed for a supporting rol...

Razer just won CES 2017 with a crazy Project Valerie three-screen laptop concept

Image
Year in and year out, hundreds of thousands of people travel to Las Vegas, and millions more follow the CES coverage of news outlets, blogs and tech websites such as the one you’re currently reading to check out both products they’ll be able to buy shortly after the show, and crazy concept designs that are unlikely to sell in many units to a mainstream audience. While we may find plenty of prototypes in the latter category that apparently don’t concern a mobile-focused readership, some are just too unique and, well, insane to fly under our radar. Case in point, what Razer tentatively calls Project Valerie.

A Wearable Subwoofer: Lofelt Basslet Hands On at CES 2017 (Video)

Image
By no means the highest-profile CES 2017 exhibitor in Las Vegas this week, Berlin-based startup Lofelt first made a few headlines last summer, when raising close to €600K on Kickstarter for the world’s “first watch-size subwoofer for your body”, which is now being showcased ahead of a general US and UK February 7 release.

Dell's Canvas is like a Surface Studio without the PC

Image
The most exciting part of Microsoft's Surface Studio — an all-in-one PC announced back in October — was its ability to fold down from a traditional, upright monitor position into a sloped surface much like a drafting table, allowing artists and designers to use it like a giant drawing surface. Now Dell is taking the idea of a digital drafting table and offering it to anyone with a PC. It's unveiling a product today called the Canvas, which is a sloped monitor — not an all-in-one with a PC inside — that's meant to sit on your desk, plug into your existing computer, and be used for sketching, animation, or anything best made with a stylus.

Dell put 10 speakers inside new XPS 27 all-in-one PC

Image
Making a distinctive and uniquely appealing desktop PC is a daunting task nowadays, but not an impossible one. Dell’s approach to this challenge, unveiled with the 2017 XPS 27 all-in-one, is to go for audio overkill. This new desktop has six speakers staring down the user — four covering the mid and bass frequencies, plus dedicated tweeters in each corner — along with two more down-firing, full-range speakers and a pair of passive radiators. I say overkill, but audio has been generally a neglected aspect of desktop PCs, with makers expecting people to buy separate speakers or use headphones, so Dell is tapping into an opportunity to deliver a true all-in-one.

Honda unveils first electric ride-sharing concept car: The NeuV concept vehicle has the power to read your mind

Image
Car companies love to say they got there first. It appears Honda may be the first major automaker to show a concept vehicle designed for the ride-sharing market. The NeuV, which was announced Thursday at CES, is an acronym for the New Electric Urban Vehicle. NeuV [noo-vee] is based on the premise that self-driving, electric cars can be put to work rather than sitting idle nearly all the time.

Razer's new Project Ariana is an immersive video projection system for a new gaming experience

Image
If you are a fan of new-age immersive gaming experiences, then you might remember the intriguing IllumiRoom concept Microsoft demoed all the way back in 2013. At the time, the advanced projection system was truly futuristic, but also really expensive and unfeasible to bring to end users at a reasonable cost.

Xiaomi announces Mi Router HD at CES for China

Image
Among the list of items Xiaomi announced at CES that will only be available in China is the new Mi Router HD. The Mi Router HD is a 2600Mbps 802.11ac Wi-Fi router with 4x4 MU-MIMO functionality, four high-gain PCB array antennae, and Qualcomm IPQ8064 network processor. But along with that it also includes a choice of either 1TB or 8GB of surveillance quality hard drive that can be used for backing up your devices and syncing with your Dropbox account. All of this is housed in an aluminum alloy body. The Mi Router HD will launch sometime in Q1 in China for under $200 for the 1TB version and under $500 for the 8TB version. Xiaomi announces white Mi Mix at CES, still China-only

Image
Just as leaked, rumored, and hinted at by the company's own teasers over the past few days, today during its CES press conference Xiaomi has made the white version of the Mi Mix official. This has a pearl-like finish, according to Xiaomi VP Hugo Barra, who was on stage to introduce it to the world. The specs stay the same as for the initially revealed black model, as you'd expect. Unfortunately the white Mi Mix, like the black one, will only be sold in China. An actual release date hasn't been mentioned.

The Misfit Vapor can dive up to 50m underwater but sidesteps Android Wear

Image
Misfit is best known for its fitness trackers but after joining Fossil it seems that the company wants in on the smartwatch action. The Misfit Vapor uses a proprietary platform (it’s not an Android Wear device), but it will give the new Casio a run for its money. Speaking of running, the Vapor has a built-in GPS receiver, an optical heart rate monitor, an altimeter so it can faithfully track your running or cycling routes. It can connect to Bluetooth headphones and play music from its 4GB of memory, but you can’t quite leave your phone at home - there’s Wi-Fi connectivity but no LTE.

Sony unveils new headphones and portable speakers within its EXTRA BASS range at CES

Image
Sony is a veritable veteran on the audio scene. The Japanese giant was busy developing high-end acoustic gear long before mobile phones were even a thing. So, every new release is understandably met with a fair bit of excitement from most enthusiasts.

Coolpad Conjr is an affordable metal phone with a great camera and terrible chipset

Image
Coolpad released an oddball phone - the Conjr. It’s a $180 phone that offers some really top notch specs but a strange choice of chipset derails the whole thing. The Coolpad Conjr has a sleek metal body with 2.5D glass on the front (70.6% screen-to-body ratio). The screen, by the way, is a 5” IPS LCD of 720p resolution. Its camera department is particularly impressive, the main camera has a 13MP sensor and OIS, while the selfie cam has an 8MP sensor. Both cameras have LED flash and f/2.2 aperture. There’s even a fingerprint reader on the back.

The Asus ZenBook 3 Deluxe sports a 14" display in a 13" notebook body

Image
Asus is traditionally very active at CES and at this year's edition of the show the company presented the ZenBook 3 Deluxe notebook. The ultrabook sports a 14" 1080p display tucked into the body of a traditional 13" laptop. As a result, the ZenBook 3 Deluxe features slim, 7.46mm bezel and 77% screen-to-body ratio.

Samsung gets into the gaming PC game with odious Odyssey laptops

Image
Gaming laptops are one of the things that every PC maker has prioritized at this year’s CES, with big names like Lenovo, and now Samsung, starting whole new sub-brands of gaming PCs. Samsung’s answer to Lenovo’s Legion is the Notebook Odyssey. The Odyssey begins with a 15-inch laptop in February and a 17-inch behemoth in April, both of which look like rejects from Alienware’s design interns. There’s an upsettingly high degree of unoriginality about these laptops, which could easily bear Acer’s Predator or Asus’ Republic of Gamers branding — they’re both cookie-cutter gaudy monstrosities.

Panasonic announces flagship GH5 Micro Four Thirds camera

Image
After teasing it at Photokina last year, Panasonic has finally revealed all the details of its flagship Micro Four Thirds camera, the LUMIX DMC-GH5, the successor to the highly popular GH4. The GH5 has a new 20 megapixel sensor that also lacks a low-pass filter for greater detail in images. The new Venus Engine also achieves improved colors, texture, and lower noise. The camera now supports ISO values up to 25,600. The GH5 uses Panasonic's excellent DFD or Depth from Defocus technology with 225 AF points, which works along with standard contrast detection autofocus for up to 2x faster focusing than the GH4.
