Nokia 2 announced with 5-inch display, 4,100mAh battery

Image
As expected, HMD has officially announced the entry-level Nokia 2 smartphone. The device comes with a 5-inch HD display, and is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 212 SoC. The handset features an 8MP main camera, and a 5MP front shooter. A large 4,100mAh battery should provide outstanding battery life, given the modest chipset and screen. HMD officially quotes 2-day battery life if you use the phone for 5 hours per day.

This is what the OnePlus 5T will look like

Image
It's no secret that Oppo and OnePlus (and vivo) are owned by the same company and it shows in a variety of ways across the devices of the three manufacturers. The OnePlus 5 has an uncanny resemblance to the Oppo R11 - they differ slightly in size, chipset and RAM, in cameras and batteries but are more or less identical in terms of design. Which is why you needn't look further than the upcoming Oppo R11s to know how the OnePlus 5T will look.

Xiaomi to announce new phone series in India on November 2

Image
Xiaomi India started sending out press invites for an event on November 2. The company plans to introduce yet another smartphone series after the Mi A1 arrival, followed by the Mi Mix 2. The invitation simply says #YourBestSelfie, although another image was seen with the "A new series is coming. Join Manu and Jai on 02.11.2017" slogan. We also get a lightning logo, suggesting the phone might have a fast charge and a good front camera, obviously.

Apple India now provides international warranty on iPhones

Image
Apple has quietly introduced international warranty on the iPhone in India, according to our sources. This means the company will honor the warranty even if the iPhone was purchased outside of India. It must be noted that this only applies to the factory unlocked versions of the iPhones and carrier-locked models do not get warranty, even if the user manages to unlock them somehow. Apple has had international warranty on most of its products but that list has always excluded the iPhone. This will be the first time Apple has decided to honor warranty outside of the region the device was purchased of, even if the user does not have Apple Care.

Skype for Android reaches 1 billion downloads

Image
It’s been a busy year for Skype, Microsoft’s messenger. It reached version 8.0, added PayPal support and themes, it plays better with other apps too. And all that hard work has been rewarded as the Android app joined the 1 billion downloads club. Skype for Android hit 100 million downloads in July 2013, then grew to 500 million downloads back in February 2015 and has continued to expand rapidly. Microsoft paid the whopping $8.5 billion in 2011 to acquire Skype from eBay. For comparison, the Redmond company payed $7.9 billion for Nokia’s device division. Oppo F5 arrives with 20MP front camera with AI

Image
After a months' worth of ads and promotions across the Philippines, the Oppo F5 is finally official. The successor to the Oppo F3, the F5 drops the front fingerprint button for a tall 18:9 6.0-inch LCD of 1080x2160px resolution. The fingerprint scanner has been moved over to the back but if you don't care to reach for it, the Oppo F5 supports face unlock. Mind you Oppo warns that this isn't as secure as the fingerprint reader.

Gmail gets native add-ons across Android and web clients

Image
Google is officially making Gmail add-ons available for everyone today, following a developer preview release that happened earlier this year. That has helped third parties build various add-ons for Gmail. Add-ons simplify your workflow because they allow you to perform certain actions (that so far would have required jumping to other apps) straight in Gmail. Your inbox can contextually surface specific add-ons based on the messages you receive, thus helping you get things done faster.

New Nokia phone heading to India on October 31

Image
HMD is launching a new Nokia phone in India at the end of the month – October 31. The “save the date” emails went out, but they are vague about which device will be featured. It’s labeled only as “the next milestone for Nokia phones”. It could be the new Nokia 7, which starts selling in China tomorrow (a flash sale). Alternatively, the still-unofficial Nokia 2 – an affordable $99 handset – could be unveiled.

Nokia 7 launches with glass back, Snapdragon 630

Image
Today the newest member of HMD Global's Android smartphone roster has become official in China. The Nokia 7 is the first Android device from the brand to sport a glass back - it's a vacuum molded 3D Corning Gorilla Glass construction no less. The 7's frame is 7000 series aluminum with diamond cut beveled edges. It sure looks premium (if you can ignore those bezels), and it comes with IP54 certification, which means it's splashproof essentially. Inside, you'll find the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 running the show, paired with either 4GB or 6GB of RAM. microSD cards are supported for expanding the built-in 64GB of storage.

Foldable ZTE Axon M is official with dual touchscreens

Image
The much leaked ZTE Axon M (codenamed Multy) has finally become official today. You can call this a flip smartphone, or a foldable one like its maker would like you to. This isn't foldable like in those tech dreams where the screen of the handset folds - instead, what we have here is a two-screen phone with a hinge in between. When it's folded, the Axon M has a display on either side. When you unfold it, you get a total viewing area of 6.75", but the bezels don't help create the illusion that you're looking at one screen and not two.

Microsoft launches Surface Book 2

Image
Microsoft has launched a new version of its flagship notebook computer, the Surface Book 2. The new machine has updated design, updated internals, updated connectivity, improved battery life and now comes in two sizes. The Surface Book 2 looks mostly similar to the original, with a removable tablet screen that has its own processor and battery that can be plugged into the keyboard facing either direction for even more performance and battery life. The design has been updated in small ways, such as in the way the hinge works and the keyboard, which makes it work a bit better.

WhatsApp rolls out live location sharing for Android and iOS

Image
Of all of Facebook's various properties, WhatsApp definitely isn't the fastest when it comes to adding new features or catching up with competitors in that regard. But it does still launch new functions from time to time, and today we're talking about live location sharing. This has been seen before in apps such as Google Maps and even Facebook Messenger - the launch in both of those cases happened back in March. Seven months later, the feature is finally ready to be added to WhatsApp.

Google Calendar gets Material redesign on the web

Image
Starting today, Google Calendar's web presence finally looks like something from 2017, not 2010. The entire web app has been revamped using the company's Material Design guidelines, which means it's now very similar in looks to the Google Calendar mobile apps. You'll see a modern color palette and a responsive layout that auto-adjusts to your screen size, and some new features are baked in too.

Huawei Mate 10 trio of videos released

Image
Huawei introduced three new phones yesterday in Munich - the Huawei Mate 10, the Huawei Mate 10 Pro and the Huawei Mate 10 Porsche Design. All three phones come with dual cameras with a f/1.6 aperture on both lenses and the Kirin 970 chipset that Huawei markets as the “First Kirin AI chipset”. A day after the announcement, Huawei Mobile posted three promo videos, highliting the key features of the Mate 10 series.

Qualcomm introduces the Snapdragon 636 with Quick Charge 4

Image
Qualcomm is hosting the 4G/5G Summit in Hong Kong where the company, along with other ecosystem leaders are talking about the next generation of connectivity. As part of the lectures and announcements, Qualcomm introduced a new 14nm FinFET process-based Snapdragon 636 chipset. It is an upgrade from the Snapdragon 630 and comes with Quick Charge 4 support for long displays with resolution up to FHD+ or 2160x1080 pixels. The CPU is Kryo 260 with eight cores, clocked up to 1.8 GHz. Qualcomm says it provides up to 40% higher performance than the Snapdragon 630’s processor. The GPU is Adreno 509, adding 10% extra performance, compared with the Adreno 508.

Huawei Mate 10 Pro and Porsche Design unveiled with 6" 18:9 AMOLED screens

Image
The Huawei Mate 10 Pro brings the best that tech giant has to offer with the new Leica dual camera and the new AI engine are front and center. Alongside it comes the Porsche Design edition, which builds on the solid hardware with an even more premium exterior. The Huawei Mate 10 Pro has a 6” AMOLED panel with a wider 18:9 ratio. The resolution raises an eyebrow, however. This year’s Pro has FHD+ resolution (that’s 1,080 x 2,160px and 402ppi), last year’s model had QHD (1440 x 2560px, 534ppi). Anyway, the screen hugs the sides of the phone closely – what Huawei calls the “barely-there-bezel”. Also, it support HDR10 and cover 112% of the NTSC color space for a superior viewing experience.

Huawei Mate 10 comes with QHD screen, F/1.6 dual Leica camera

Image
The Huawei Mate 10 builds on the impressive legacy of last year’s model. It maintains a classic 16:9 screen, but this time it’s sharper thanks to its QHD resolution – 1,440 x 2,560px. This pushes the pixel density up to 499ppi as the diagonal measures the same as before, 5.9”. Huawei did enable HDR10 support for a superior viewing experience. The new Leica dual camera also marks a massive improvement over the outgoing model with its super bright f/1.6 aperture, which will let much more light in than the old f/2.2 aperture. The camera maintains its assistants – OIS, Laser and Phase detection AF.

Archos launches the Diamond Omega with bezel-less 18:9 screen

Image
Earlier this year Archos launched two phones that looked suspiciously like nubia devices by ZTE. Today a new device appeared on the French company’s website and guess what - it is a rebranded ZTE nubia again. The Archos Diamond Omega comes with an 18:9 bezel-less screen and two front-facing cameras, just like the ZTE nubia Z17S, announced yesterday.

Razer phone spotted in the wild

Image
In case you missed it, Razer is allegedly planning to unveil its first smartphone on November 1. That does sound a little odd, since the gaming gear US company is not exactly known for its mobile hardware. Although, it does already have a Razer Edge Pro gaming tablet under its belt, which enjoyed questionable success at best. Leaks regarding the alleged smartphone are still scarce, but it has already popped-up on GFXBench and now a rather obscure source claims to have a photo of the handset as well. We'll leave it up to you to judge on authenticity, but as the story goes, an unnamed insider, working in the gaming industry, acquired the still unannounced devices as a testing platform for games.

Honor to launch a bezel-less phone on December 5

Image
Honor just introduced the 7X, but another announcement is just around the corner. The company sent out media invites for an event in London. December 5 will be the day a smartphone with barely existent bezels will be introduced. The invitation runs the slogan “Max your view”, suggesting a phablet with rounded corners and a 2.5D curved screen is being announced. The poster also reveals that the bezel-less Honor will have dual cameras (the OO part of the #IOOI tag) and will be AI-focused (the second O is modeled to look like a droid). Given that Huawei recently announced the Kirin 970 chipset with a focus on AI, this will likely be powering the new phone.

Microsoft Edge for Android now available on the Play Store

Image
Microsoft has made the Android version of the new Edge browser publicly available on the Play Store. Users will be warned that the app is still in development and will be unstable but they can still go ahead and install it. Microsoft released Edge on iOS and Android last week for Windows Insider users exclusively. The iOS version of the app exceeded Apple's 10000 user limit for TestFlight apps and is currently not available to anyone.

Samsung Galaxy S9 to get the entire first batch of Snapdragon 845 chips for its early launch

Image
In August we heard that Samsung bought up almost all available Snapdragon 845 chips from Qualcomm for its Galaxy S9 and S9+ duo. Today a new report basically confirms that the entire first production run of the new chipset will be sold to Samsung for its S9 phones. The S9 and S9+ with the Snapdragon 845 inside are destined for the US market, unsurprisingly. Other smartphone makers will get access to the 845 at a later point compared to Samsung, which will thus once again have a time-to-market advantage over its competitors from this point of view.

Samsung Galaxy Note9 to have under-display fingerprint sensor

Image
Next year's Samsung Galaxy Note9 is now predicted to sport a feature that was mentioned a lot in early rumors regarding both its predecessor, the Note8, as well as Apple's iPhone X. We're talking about a fingerprint sensor that sits under the display. Such an optical sensor is likely to appear in the Note9 according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, a legendary purveyor of mostly Apple-related mumblings.

BlackBerry's Motion to cost Europeans €499

Image
BlackBerry unveiled the Motion mere hours ago, pointed to the Middle East as its initial market and gave no word on when others join in. But we may have a hint at what the new phone could cost once it comes to Europe, courtesy of Dutch retailer Belsimpel.

Microsoft confirms Windows Phone is dead

Image
Windows Phone 8.1 is over and after series of tweets by Joe Belfiore we know that Windows 10 Mobile is also slowly but steadily heading to the product graveyard of Microsoft. The Microsoft VP, responsible for the mobile OS said that Microsoft will keep supporting the platform with bug fixes, but no new features or hardware will be introduced. In the following tweet, Belfiore explained the decision. He says that developers never really backed the platform and Microsoft could not find partners to work with. Along with the low number of users, Windows 10 Mobile gets into a “Paragraph 22” situation from which there is no escape.

BlackBerry Motion is now official without physical keyboard

Image
The BlackBerry Motion is now official with a 5.5-inch 1080p LCD and no physical keyboard whatsoever - neither slide-out nor permanently fixed one. The new BlackBerry phone is built around a Snapdragon 625 chipset with 4GB of RAM, 32GB of built-in storage and a 4,000mAh battery. With a power-efficient chipset and a huge battery like that battery life should be quite impressive.

Deal: Unlocked Dual SIM Samsung Galaxy S8+ for $629.99

Image
An ebay deal is letting you have the Galaxy S8+ G955FD Dual SIM version for a cent under $630 in the US. This one comes packing Samsung’s own Exynos 8895 chipset as opposed to the Snapdragon 835 that's normally available in the country. Keep in mind that the Dual SIM device features a hybrid slot, so you'd have to live without microSD memory expansion option if you take advantage of that and rely on the 64GB of built-in storage only.

The new Pixel 2 phones support USB-PD up to 27W

Image
If you’re picky about your USB accessories, you may check if it’s approved by Google software engineer Besnon Leung. He has some good news about the new Pixel 2 and 2 XL – they support up to 27W charging! For that you will need to buy a compatible USB Power Delivery charger. The phones ship with an 18W charger (same as the original Pixels) that promises 7 hours of mixed usage with just 15 minutes of charge.

HMD considers a 4G Nokia featurephone for India

Image
HMD will not bring the 3G Nokia 3310 (2017) to India, saying that the local market lacks interest in 3G phones. Yet, in an interview Ajey Mehta, Vice President of HMD Global for India divulged that HMD is considering making a 4G featurephone. He referenced Reliance Jio's JioPhone, an affordable 4G featurephone that's making an impact on the market. The Finnish maker is one of the few remaining to do featurephones so it might have a go at the ultra-affordable market in the subcontinent if interest translates to actual sales. Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 coming to India on October 10

Image
Xiaomi will be launching the new Mi MIX 2 smartphone in India on October 10, 2017. The company sent out invitations to the Indian media for the event today. The Mi MIX 2 was announced last month as a successor to last year’s Mi MIX that started the bezel-less design revolution. The new Mi MIX 2 improves upon almost every aspect of the original but is much smaller and more manageable.

The original Google Pixel duo is now $100 cheaper

Image
It is easy to get caught up in the excitement fueled by Google's latest Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, but they don't come cheap. Plus, there is also the whole availability issue associated with Pixel phones. This means that even if you have the money to put down, you might just have to wait in line for one. So this might actually be a good opportunity to pick up one of the original Pixel pair. Google has already slashed the price of the regular Pixel down to $549 for a 32GB unit. The 5.5-inch Pixel XL starts at $670. Upgrading to 128GB on either is $100 extra. There are trade-in and financing options available straight from Google as well.

Google Pixelbook brings new life into Google's laptop experiment

Image
Google is finally back to making laptops and its Pixelbook is its best and most premium one yet. Built for Chrome OS the Google Pixelbook is light and promises a 10 hour battery life and timely updates. Furthermore this is the first laptop with Google Assistant built right in. Despite its Chrome OS designation, the Google Pixelbook delivers solid PC specs - Intel's Core i5 or i7 CPUs (no word on the generation just yet), up to 16GB of RAM and up to 512GB of flash storage.

iPhone X retail box shows up on Apple's site

Image
Perhaps unwittingly, Apple has revealed the retail box of the iPhone X. The front of the box highlights the unique screen of the flagship while the boxes for the 8 and 8 Plus show the glass backs of the phones.

Here's how to deal with iTunes' corrupted or incompatible backup error

Image
Apple just launched the new iPhone 8 and a lot of older iPhone buyers are upgrading to it. If you are a sensible person, you would have backed up your old iPhone to your computer using iTunes (let's be real, none of us are paying Apple for more iCloud storage for cloud backup). But when you get your shiny new iPhone 8 (or any of the other iPhones that are still on sale) and try to restore from your old back, your iTunes throws this in your face. The problem is here that iTunes is an even bigger pile of trash than what we already thought it was. Fortunately, your backup is still usable and all you need to do is upgrade your phone.

Android Pay passes 1,000 supported financial institutions

Image
Android Pay has added another 16 financial institutions, surpassing the 1,000 mark, now stranding 1,012. The service is adding banks, retailers and institutions in the US, UK, Canada, Russia, Belgium, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, Australia, Poland, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Ireland. The list of supported businesses (and countries) is ever growing but there are more than a few that are still holding off, namely Barclays Bank in the UK. So far Apple has been more instrumental in adding support for its Apple Pay than Google has been with Android Pay.

Deal: Sony Xperia XZ1 gets its first discount in the US

Image
Amazon US has cut the asking price of the Sony Xperia XZ1 from $699 to $649. The discount concerns the Black and Moonlit Blue Xperia XZ1's while the Venus Pink and Warm Silver editions are still at their original $699 level.

Samsung Galaxy A (2018) renders show off the Infinity Display

Image
We caught a glimpse of the Galaxy A5 (2018) and the Galaxy A7 (2018), now it’s time for a better look. Check out the 18.5:9 Infinity Display on the front, it makes the phones look premium. Benchmark results so far have failed to reveal the resolution, but we’re probably looking at 1080p – or rather 1,080 x 2,220px to match the aspect ratio.

Get a load of the Nokia 9 in Polished Blue

Image
We saw what the upcoming Nokia 9 looks like and now, courtesy of the same source, we get to see it in its Polished Blue variant. Nothing outside of the color has changed - the phone has a dual camera on the back (probably Zeiss-branded), a fingerprint reader, again on the back, and a curved edge to edge display on the front (likely an OLED).

WhatsApp finally gets its own emoji set... sort of

Image
After years of using Apple's emoji set across all of its versions, WhatsApp has now finally designed its own emoji set, which is available to those running the latest Android beta. One look at it though and things don't look quite different. Indeed, the set looks awfully similar to the outgoing Apple emoji set, with some elements of the new Android Oreo emoji set with a dash of Twitter emoji set thrown in. While all of these are based on a common instruction from Unicode and it makes sense for them to look similar to reduce lost in translation between devices, they are a bit too similar.
