Xiaomi market share touted as top of the Chinese pile in April

Is it still fair game to call Xiaomi a startup? It’s had the typical meteoric rise that successful firms have had and it’s getting out of its first major rut in sales with the release of a new flagship or two.

The Chinese manufacturer’s CEO, Lei Jun, is thanking supporters for helping it top the home market in April. Specifically, the Sino Market Research report said that Xiaomi got 26 percent of the market. It didn’t signify whether the numbers were for sales or shipments.

Huawei and Honor, while technically separate, come within striking distance of Xiaomi at a combined 23.7 percent. Smartphone debutant Letv got 10.5 percent of the pie while Apple came in fourth place overall.

The report is a troubling sign, though, for Lenovo, as it has seemingly been absorbed into the “Others” piece. It’ll be months yet before we can even tell if its reliance on the Moto brand can help it dig out of the hole.
