WhatsApp to bring back text status updates after backlash
WhatsApp is bringing back the text status
updates, according to a report by Techcrunch. The latest beta of the Android
app includes the feature and will roll out to the stable version in the next
few weeks. iOS version will be getting it later.
Last month, WhatsApp replaced the text status
updates that allowed users to inform others of their availability, with Snapchat-like
video stories. This resulted in backlash from users as nor did anyone, ever,
ask for a Stories feature to be implemented in WhatsApp but the previous text
status messages was a regularly used feature of the app.
Responding to this, WhatsApp said,
“We heard from our users that people missed the ability to set a
persistent text-only update in their profile, so we’ve integrated this feature
into the ‘About’ section in profile settings. Now, the update will appear next
to profile names anytime you view contacts, such as when creating a new chat or
looking at Group info. At the same time, we’re continuing to build on the new
Status feature that gives people fun and engaging ways to share photos, videos
and GIFs with their friends and family throughout their day.”
It's unlikely WhatsApp will ever consider
removing the stories feature from the app but at least the old Status messages
are coming back.
